How does a Sudbury School Operate?
Like all Sudbury Schools, Tallgrass Sudbury School is run as a democracy. Day-to-day operations at Tallgrass are handled by the School Meeting, where each student and staff member has one vote. The School Meeting creates the rules and regulations.
How is discipline handled?
The rules created by School Meeting are enforced by the Judicial Committee (JC). The JC is comprised of several students and one staff member. School Meeting members can write complaints when they believe a rule has been broken. The JC investigates the issue to determine whether a rule was broken and, if it finds that a rule has been broken, it determines the consequences.
How can parents get involved?
Broader issues, such as budget approval, setting tuition and fees, awarding diplomas, and advising the school are handled by the Assembly. Parents, staff, students and elected outside members are all full voting members of Tallgrass Sudbury School, which is organized as an Illinois not-for-profit institution.
